THOMPSON RETAINS HIS TITLE. BRISBANE, April 6. George Thompson, of Newcastle, _ retained the Australian heavy-weight boxing title by easily outpointing Merv Williams. Williams gave 20 pounds in weight. ' A GAME FIGHTER. NEW YORK, Amil 4. Kid Berg took a 10-round decision from Joe Glick (137£1b). Berg seemed tired. He was fouled twice, but refused to complain. Sports writers emphasise that in this manner he has saved British boxing reputation in the United; States after Scott’s performances. Berg, who has invariably put up .“a whale of a scrap,” showed gameness aiid speed. LA BARBA DEFEATS PAUL, NEW YORK, April 5.' At Buffalo, Fidel la Barba (1241 b) took a 10-rounds decision from Paul (1241 b) in a swift", hard fight, but la Barba, was easily the better of the two men. The bout started at a fast pace, with Paul slightly superior. He staggered Fidel in the second. There were then several even rounds, in which the men stood toe-to-toe ; and slugged to heads and bodies viciously, both connecting with terrific lefts. By the eighth round
Paul had begun to tire, and la Barba landed threes blows for each one he received, though he was still receiving hgrd blows. In the ninth Paul was obviously tired and was unable to get close, while la Barba hammered liis face at the ropes. In the tenth both tried wildly for a knock-out, with Paul missing and la Barba unable to land the required punch.
