SIR A. KNOX RESIGNS.
AUSTRALIAN CHIEF JUSTICE. • United Press Association—Copyright.) SYDNEY, March 31. Sir Adrian Knox, Chief Justice of the High Court, of Australia, has resigned. Sir Isaac Alfred Isaacs has been appointed to that post. Sir Adrian Knox states that having benefited very considerably under the will of an intimate friend, who died recently, he has thus become involved in a business carried on in Australia, and the position thus created is incompatible with the retention by him of any judicial office. Sir Adrian Knox was one of the most intimate friends of the late Mr John Brown. Before being appointed Chief Justice lie was a prominent figure on the Australian turf, being for many years chairman of the Australian Jockey Club. .
Sir Adrian Knox, K.C.M.G., was born at Sydney in 1863, and was a son of of Sir Edward Knox. He was educated for the legal profession., was called to the New South Wales Bar in 1886, and soon rose to a foremost place in liis profession. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly for Woollahra from 1894-98. and 1 was chairman of the Australian Jockey Club from 1906-15 ahd 1916-19. He was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia in 1919 ini succession to Sir Samuel Griffith. Sir Isaac Alfred Isaacs, Justice of the High Court of Australia, was born at Melbourne in 1855, and after a brilliant university career was called to the Bar in 1880, and rose to an eminent place in the profession. He was a distinguished politician in State and Federal, spheres, and has held Cabinet rank in the State Ministry. He was prominent in the Federal movement, was a. member of the Convontion which framed the Comuiouwealth Constitution; in 1897-9 S, and was elected to the first House of Representatives. He was Attorney-General in the Deakin Ministry in 1906, in which year lie was elevated to the High Court Bench.
