ARTIFICIAL BACILLI.
A SUGGESTED DISCOVERY. (United Press Association—Copyright.) NEW YORK, March 24. A message from Berkley, California, states that Dr. C. B. Lipman ((Professor of Plant Physiology) is speculating on whether he has accidentally discovered "artificial bacilli." which appeared under the microscope during the preparation of agar, a substance made from a Japanese seaweed. Dr. Lipman found rod-shaped bodies which he became convinced were the living bacilli, although they waj£ merely crystallisations of agar, bearing the appearance of bacilli and absorbing dyes as the latter would.
