LOOKING BACK.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” March 22, 1905.) St. Patrick’s Day Sports Association. —A meeting of the committee of the St. Patrick’s Day Sports Association was held last evening. Present: — Messrs Geoffrey Porter (chairman), D. Mcriarty, H. McElrea, AV. Smith, T. Hancox, and James Brown (secretary). Prize money to the amount of £49 7s was passed for payment. The treasurer reported that the recent athletic meeting had resulted in a loss of £l7. Poultry Society:—A meeting of the Ashburton Poultry Society was held last night in the secretary’s Pffice. Present:— Messrs Turner, Hendry, Breeze, Pearce, Johnston, Parkin and Miller. The South Island Poultry Association wrote allocating June 23 and 24 to the Ashburton Society for tlieir poultry show. A donation of £2 2s was received from Mr G. A. M. Buckdey. Air Berryman was appointed correspondent to the New Zealand Poultrvkeeper. Baptist Sunday School.—The twentyfirst anniversary in connection with the Baptist Sunday School was celebrated last evening by a social entertanment in the church. The chair was occupied by the Rev. W. L. Salter. Sonrrs, dialogues aiid recitations, interspersed with appropriate anthems and speeches provided two hours’ profitable enjoyment. The superintendent (Mr E. Tucker) said there was a roll number of 109 as against 127 last year. The treasurer (Mr A. Silcock) reported that the financial statement showed a, satistory state of affairs. Assessment Court.—The Assessment Court consisting of Messrs Wr* S.M., John Lambie, and Joseph Sealyi will sit at the Courthouse on April 7, to bear objections to the valuation rolls for the Borough of Ashburton, the Tinwald Town District, and the road districts of Upper Ashburton and \Yakanui.
