TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” March 21,1905.) Ashburton Rifles.—A Government inspection parade of the Ashburton. Rifles was held last evening at the drill shed, when over fifty members were present, under Captain W. K. Dolman, V.D., Lieutenants Thomas Hayes, V.D. and George Hefforcl. The company was put through several movements, and acquitted itself creditably. Catholic Literary Society.—The usual weekly meeting of the Catholic Literary Society was held in the Schoolroom last evening. The vice-president (Air Soal) occupied the chair. The programme for the evening was devoted to parliamentary business dealing with the Shops and Offices Act Amendment Act. The -programme for next Tuesday evening is a ping pcng tournament, for which Airs S. Madden was appointed handkapper. Personal.—Air P. AV. Dearden, of f-owclitfe, intends to pay a visit to England at an early date.—The Ashton School Committee has decided to recommend the Education Board to appoint Air J. B. J. Campbell of Sheffield, for the position of headmasterof the school.
Ragwort.—A farmer in the Upper Ashburton district recently found a plant growing on . is property which has since been judged to be ragw9rt by several who are conversant with the weed. Needless to say, the farmer referred to has taken every precaution to destroy the few specimens of this troublesome weed' grew, ing on his nroperty.
