FALSE PRETENCES.
LABOURER BEFORE THE COURT.
IMPOSED OX BOARDING HOUSE. In the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr W. H. Bundle, J.P., and Mr G. Kelly, J.P., Michael Henrv. aged 41, a labourer, was charged tnat at Ashburton, on March 18, ho did? with intent to defraud, , obtain food and lodgings to the extent of 10s, from Evangeline Stills, by a talse pretence, by falsely representing that he was employed by Knox Brothers, and was waiting to be paid. He was also charged with being an idle and disorderly person-.
Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin said that accused came from _ Met liven. He was a bird of passage. He went to Mrs Stills’s boardinghouse and obtained lodging. He was arrested yesterday, v. hen he had Id in his possession. People who practised frauds such as this were hard to detect, as they often went away from the town. Accused said he was a bit stupid with liquor, and did not know what he was doing. On each charge accused was sentenced to 48 hours in gaol, the sentences to be concurrent.
