AEROPLANE MAIL SUBSIDIES.

HEAVY COST NOT JUSTIFIED. CANBERRA, March 13. The Auditor-General, in his report, discloses the fact that the cost of carrying letters by the aeroplane services operating in various parts of Australia was very heavy. The subsidy paid by the Government on one service represented £4 per letter, the subsidy to another 10s; still another was 2s per letter. He claimed that the cost was not justified. The Federal Government has decided to discontinue the' subsidy of £28,000 a year to the Larkin Aircraft Supply, Ltd., for air mail services between Melbourne and Hay, Adelaide and Cootamundra, Mildura and Broken Hill, on the grounds mentioned in the Auditor-General's report. Subsidies to the Queensland and Western Australian air services are to be continued. Captain Larkin, managing director, stated that his company would probably have to wind up, dismissing 100 employees and closing down their large aircraft works.
