Two brothers, Leonard and Stanley Montefiore, convicted of conspiring _o defraud the Ocean Accident Guarantee Corporation, have been sentenced. L. Montefiore was sentenced to two years imprisonment, but if he is able to pay £IOOO costs of the prosecution it :s recommended that sentence be reduced to six months. Stanley was sentenced to one year's, imprisonment, to be released on bond on making restitution of £290. The judge said that the cost of prosecution would probably shock the public conscience when it knew how much the case cost in the administration of law. The total cost was £1513. After a second trial that lasted seven days. Leonard Roy Montefiore, aged 36, an insurance manager, and Stanley Roberte Montefiore, aged 29, a salesman, were convicted of conspiracy. Two'others, George Arthur Baker, a motor engineer, and Lionel Vincent Shaw, a fire assessor, were acquitted. The four were charged with conspiring, between February and May, 1928, to obtain £2OO bv fraud from the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation. Prosecuting counsel stated that a number of similar cases of bogus claims were involved. It was impossible to discover the total defalcations, but during Leonard Montefiore's management the company's losses were estimated at nearly £45,000.
