AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
INCREASES FORESHADOWED. HEAVIER TAX ON PETROL. (United Press Association—Copyright.) CANBERRA. March 7. Following the Caucus- meeting it was stated that there was no likelihood ot further increases in direct taxation. Nevertheless important amendments to "'the general Taxation law are foreshadowed. Further tariff duties are also contemplated. Another taxation proposal the Government confirmed was an additional petrol tax of two pence half penny per gallon.
OBJECTION IN THE WEST. SECESSION ADVOCATED. PERTH, March 7. Speaking at an election meeting Mr H. Richardson, M.L.A., said he would advocate the secession ol' \\ estern Australia from the Commonwealth. Sir James 'Mitchell (Leader of the Opposition), commenting on the petrol tax, said: "Thai is federation for von. Let us get out as soon as we ran." NO DECISION YET MADE. (Received This Day. 10.10 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Prime Minister (Mr J. H. Sculliii) states that no final decision lias been reached regarding the extra imposition of 4 twopence halfpenny a gallon in the duty on petrol.
