GUILTY OF FRAUD.
ONCE RECOMMENDED FOR V.C. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 7. Described by his counsel as an excellent soldier, a rotten civilian, Henry Ray Vercco. a half-caste Maori, aged 48, was sentenced bv the Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) to-day to six months in gaol, to be followed by twelve months' reformative detention, on eigit charges of obtaining £36 by valueless cheques. V.ercoe served in the African and the Great Wars. Counsel stated that in Court this morning, Mr Toll (incoming president of the Law Society) informed him that Vercce was the bravest man he ever saw at the Front, and he had recommended him for the Victoria Cross. He owned 2000 acres of land, and was to have received £3OO from The Native Land Court, but recently the matter was held up by some proclamation. He was convicted of false pretences in 1912, 1922 and 1925.
