MEETING OF AMATEURS. V j . ' A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. % After lying dormant for two years the Ashburton Amateur Cycling , and Athletic Club has again become active and its revival was marked by a short programme of events in the Domain last evening, when despite unpleasant weather, there was a good attendance of spectators. Many new members have been enrolled, and the performance of competitors augurs well for the success of the club. Good entries were received for both athletic and cycling events. The results were as follow: 100 Yards Handicap—First heat (o): K. Nicoll (6yds) 1, G. Robilhard (syds) 2 I. Bonifant (7yds) 3. Second heat (5): J. Dickinson (6yds) 1, R. Shearman 7vds) 2, J. Welsh (3yd's) 3 Final: Nicoll 1, Dickinson 2, Bonifant 3. Nicoll won by a yard. Dickinson came away well at the finish but was unable to overtake the first man. The third man was a yard away One Mile Scratch Cycling—(4): R. Boswell 1, W. Cunliffe 2, G. Shierlaw 3. The field kept together until the entrance to the straight in the last lap when Boswell sprinted and won by inches, the third man being half a wheel behind. Time, 2mm 25 4-osec. 600 Yards Handicap—(s): Iv- Nicoll (scr) 1, A. Baigent (scr) 2, W. Gorman (25vds) 3. Nicoll looked like a winner from the start and went to the front at the beginning of the straight and won comfortably by five yards without serious opposition. Two yards separated second and third. Time, lmin 24 4“ssbc. 300 Yards Handicap (5) : G. d’Auvergne (25yds) 1, S. H. Truman (4yds) 2, I. Bonifant (20vds) 3. Won by four yards. Time, 33 3-ssec. Relay Race, 400 Yards—(3): Moore s Ltd. (K. Moore, T. Brown J.Varcoe), 2ovds, 1: Banks (K. Nicoll, J. Todd, G Robilliard). scr, 2; Park House (R. Callan, S. H. Truman, G. d’Auvergne), 10yds, 3. Won easily. Time, 4osee.
HALF-MILE RECORD. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The fastest time e.ver recorded in Christchurch for an 880 yards run was put up last evening at English Bark by J. D. Pitt, champion middle distance professional runner from _Australia. Fitt’s time, on a good cinder track, was lmin 53 2-ssec, a really phenomenal performance.
