TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(Prom tho "Guardian." Jan. 20, 1905). Sale of a Farm.—Mr D. Thomas reports that he has sold Mr A. J. Dent's farm at Lyiulhurst', containing 900 acres, to Air W. !<'. Campbell, at a satisfactory figure. Mr Dent is retiring from the taim solely on account of ill-health. Angling.—Several Ashburton anglers base had an exceptionally good run of luck at the mouth of the Ashburton River lately, while l the fish caught have been' unusually large and well conditioned. The successful 1 anglers were Mr, Mrs and Master Berryman, Messrs Sinclair, Cambridge, 1C D. Johnston and Master E. f Ease. The fish caught weighed up to lOlbs. v

The Monster Picnic.—The first monster picnic organised by the Borough Council was held at Timaru yesterday. People from the country arrived m Ashburton at an early hour, and by 8 o'clock two trains drawing 25 and 13 carriages respectively, and carrying x 1700 passengers left for Timaru. Accompanying the excursion, in addition to the Picnic Committee, were Mr J. McLachlan, M.H.R., the Mayor (Mr H. Davis) and the Town Clerk (Mr H. H. Fooksj. The excursionists were welcomed, at Timaru by the Mayor (Mr Craigie) and Cr. Priest (chairman of the Caroline Bay Committee). The Ashburton County Band played selections during the day. The Mayor of Ashburton, Mr McLachlan and members of the committee were taken for a drive round the town by Mr Craigie, while the visiting Oddfellows were entertained hy the local 'Lodge. A short programme of sports was held on the beach, the results being as follow: Friendly Societies' Handicap—Oddfellows: T. Corbett 1, Hughes 2; Druids, Harman 1, Harris 2; Hibernians, J. Heajy 1, Madden 2; Foresters, J. Brown 1, Page 2. Tradesmen's Handicap—Retailers: W. Smith 1, W. Anderson 2; assistants, Rands 1. P. Healy 2; butchers, J. H. Rule 1, Harman 2. 220 Yards Amateur Handicap—J. Brown 1, S. Bass 2. 100 Yards Cash Handicap—Rands 1. P. Healy 2. Single Women's Race—Miss L. Crum 1, Miss A. Begg 2.
