Farewell to Adjutant and Mrs Gray. —A tea anct social gathering was held in the Salvation Army Barracks last evening to provide a farewell to Adjutant and .Wis Cray who have been transferred to tlie i/yttelton Corps, alter 12 years at Ashburton. Tlie various, tallies were presided oyer by tlie lady members of the Corps, and a large number of mends, sympathisers, ana soldiers sat down to, the sumptuous repast provided. The after me'etui}!; took the form of speeches interspersed with song. Addi-esses .were giyen by Adjutant and -Mrs Gray and the Rev. W. L. Salter. It'wasreported that Ensign J. McKay woiild riot arrive in Ashburton until 'February 1 26. Personal.—Air John McLachlan, M.H.H., was in Ashburton to-day.— Mr Bert Stuart,'of Chertsey, who has been confined to Led in Ashburton for, some few days, has so' far recovered as to enable him to return to his home.— We are pleased to , hear that Mrs George Lamb, senr., of Elgin, is show-ing-signs of improvem«pit.. , ■■■• jj -• Sale of Wheat.— r The National Mortgage and Agency Comnany report the sale of 2000 sacks of wheat, half Tuscan and half Velvet, to a \ southern miller, at 3s 6d per bushel at a country station from which the railage rate to Lyttelton is 2Jd per bushel. Junior National 'Scholarships.—The following local pupils have passed the examination for Junior National Scholarships and Free Places at Technical Schools:—Colin Hendry (Ashburton), 583 marks j Maior Jones (Asfiburton), 522; .John Mcßae (Hanmstead), 430; Edna Bundy (Hampstead), 420: Eccentricity.—An eccentric millionaire who has just died at Des Moines, lowa, has lett £IO,OOO to found a home for drunkards' wives. •
Women in Church.—By an tinanimous vote, the. congregation of the Wesley Methodist Church, Toronto, has decided that in future, all women shall remove their hats during the Sunday evening service. Pupil Teachers' Examinations.—The completed results of the examination of pupil teachers held in connection with the North Canterbury Board of Education are available, the following local teachers passing all with merit : School management (third year), Mr Thomas J. Stephens. Ordinary examinations (second' year): Miss' Myrtle Campbell (Tinwald), Miss Annie "Mclean (Rakaia South); third year, Miss Fanny Osborne (Rakaia South), Mr Harold T.
