WAKE UP

ADVICE TO NEW ZEALAND.

CATERING FOR TOURISTS.

(Special to the "Guardian.") WELLINGTON, January 16. For twenty-five years, Mr W. A. James has filled the post of New Zealand's Publicity Agent at Vancouver, and at present is spending three months in the Dominion, his first visit for twenty years. He is accompanied by his wife. . ' In an interview this morning, lie expressed amazement at the growth of the New Zealand cities, the reality far exceeding his expectations. Excellent (results had followed New Zealand's participation in the Toronto Exhibition, and the appointment of Mr Collins as Canadian Trade Commissioner was looked upon with gratification. He said that New Zealand would have to wake up to the fact that the wealthy American tourist could not be expected to be content with, or recommend \o friends, second class and mediocre accommodation. If New Zealand really intended to cater for tourist traffic" from America, .she would have to shake off her complacency in these matters. New Zealand's trade with Canada was growing apace. There was a minority outcry against the importation! of New Zealand butter into Canada, but this came from local producers, who were interested in keeping prices skyhigh in the winter months. As a .matter of fact, Canada could not produce anvthing like the amount of butter it requited and it was to the credit of New Zealand exporters that they had takeni advantage of this market and incidentally reaped the benefit of the Trade Treaty! between Australia and Canada.

The tariff, wall, put up by the United States against Canada, he suggested, might in the long run do Canada good, forcing her to seek other markets and thus stimulating Empire trade.
