ARAPUNI WORKS.
GRATIFYING PROGRESS. (Per Press Association ) AUCKLAND, January 7. "Work on the by-path tunnel at Arapuni has been completed. Last week a most successful experimental trial was carried 1 out when a great volume of water was released through the newly lined escape. The Hon. E. A. Ransom. Minister of Public Works, stated in an interview this morning that the engineer-in-chief, Mr Furkert, had reported a few days ago that the re-lining of the by-path tunnel had been successfully effected. The Minister said that the progress made on the work at Arapuni , was most gratifying. The anxiety experienced a few months ago in consequence of erosion at the spillway had been allayed. It was hoped that it would “never be necessary to use the by-path tunnel, but it was reassuring to know that this channel was available in the event of the water pressure becoming too great.
