COUNTY CENTRES.

(From Our Own Correspondents). METHVEN. The prolonged spell of dry weather came to an end on Wednesday, when rain set in from the south-west m the early hours of the morning. Up till U a m. 20 points were recorded, and ram was still falling. The rain was badly needed and will do an immense amount of good to growing crops and feed. The monthly meeting of the Methven District High School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr H. *->■ A. Lock presiding. Owing to the absence of the' Headmaster (Mr A. S. Kennedy) who was called away from the district hurriedly, the monthly report was not presented. Mr ±slacW (assistant master) attended, and asked the committee to appoint officials tor the annual school snorts to be held tomorrow. The following were appointed:—Timekeepers, Messrs T. S. Harrison and J. Campbell; starters, Messrs J. T. Mangin and W. J. Burrows; iudges, Messrs R. F. Renai, A. OardenT and J. W. M. Dart; steward for jumping events, Mr W. J. Burrows. The secretary was instructed to write to, the Registrar of the University ot New Zealand asking that Methven be again a centre for the Matriculation examination. The secretary was also instructed to write to the Education Department for a Dental Clinic for Methven. In the meantime the secretary is to carry on negotiations with other schools in the district.in connection with the establishment of the Clinic. The Domain Board having granted permission, it was decided to remove the building from the Domain swimming pool, and to re-erect it at the new .baths, also to proceed with the feneing of the .baths immediately. .The monthlv meeting of the committee of the Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Mount Hutt Road Board s office last evening. Mr S. Buckett presided, and there were also present Messrs J. McD. Anderson, AY. J. Owen E. F. Renai, A. G. Foreman (hon. secretary) and W. C. Battson. The balance-sheet, in connection with the concert in aid of the brigade funds recently given by Mr Chag. Buckett and his party showed a net proht ot £23.lGs 6d. This was considered highly satisfactory. Mr Renai (chairman of the entertainment committee) referred in complimentary terms to the work of Mrs Morgan and Miss • Ivy Anderson, who took charge of the catering for the party, and a vote ot thanks was passed to them for thenwork. A vote -of thanks was also passed to the members of the Brigade and all who had helped to make the function such a success. It was decided to apnly to the Hall Committee for a refund of the charge for the hall. The secretary reported that there were still two vacancies on the .Brigade. It was resolved to get these positions filled as soon as possible. BARRHILL. The opening of : the newly-formed Barrhill Tennis Club's courts was held on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number ot members ano friends. The president (Mr A. Holmes) expressed pleasure at the interest shown by tbose present. Btort •*■ ' dresses were also given by Mi tampion, and Mr Bishop The first balls were plaved bv Mrs A. Holmes and Mr Campion. Afternoon tea was provided bv the ladies, after which some enjoyable games were played. RAKAIA. The installation of the officers of Edith Cavell Rebekah Lodge was he.d in the Rakaia Town Hall on Tuesday evening. The installation was conducted by Sister I. Coward, L.D.D.G.M. (Ashburton). She was assisted by Sister Stevenson, D.G. Marshal; Sister Magson, D.G. Warden: Sister Thompson, DG. Recording Secretary; Sister Clark, D.G. Financial Secretary; Sister Fussell, D.G. Sister Newman., D.G. Chaplain, and Brother Coward, D.G. Inside Guardian. The officers installed were:—P.N.G., Sister L. Newman; N.G., Sister M. Newman; V G., Sister R, Cornelius; Recording Secretary, Sister M. Tatterson; Financial Secretary, Sister A. Shannon; Treasurer, Sister S. J. Sliannon; N arden, Sister T. Clark; Conductor, SisterJ Stevenson; Chaplain, Sister A. Edgington; R.S.N.G., Sister E Rapjey; L.SN.G., Sister W. O'Reilly; R.9.V.G., Sister Richards; L.S.V.G., Sister M. Raplev;' Inside Guardian, .Sister C Shannon; Organist, Sister M Hunt. Sister M. Newman, N.G., thanked the members of the Edith Cavell Lodge for electing her N.G. She also thanked Sister Coward, L.D.D.G.M., for the excellent manner in which she and her officers had conducted the installation-. Sister Coward. L.D.D.G.M., expressed ' pleasure at being able to be present and wished the N.G. and her officers a successful term of office. On behalf of the members of the Edith Cavell Lodge,- Sister Coward presented Sister * Edgmgton with a framed Past Grand s 'certificate. After several weeks of fine, sunny weather, with an occasional day or two of north-west winds, the weather changed during the early- hours pi Wednesdav morning, when a misty rain began to* fall, continuing throughout Wednesdav. The crops and vegetable gardens will benefit as a result, lhe tstmosphere is much colder. MOUNT SOMERS. The Mt. Somers parochial vestry* met at the vicarage on Monday evening Those present were the Rev. HM. Cocks (chairman), Mrs J. A. Lilley, Colonel R. B. Neill, and Messrs .1. H. Boaler, A. N. Grigg, H. N. Armstrong, - D Duff, L. R. Harrison, J. Mclvor, S. Baxter, F. Peter, E. C. Wood, and J. T Bull. After a long discussion on tlie methods of raising funds, the matter was referred to the following committee, the Rev. H. M. Cocks, Colonel Neill. and Messrs Armstrong, Grigg, and Wood, to consider and report at a later meeting. The. work of putting the Glebe land in order was lelt in the hands of -Mr Grigg. A number of repairs and improvements to the vicarage were authorised to be attended to immediately. It was reported that the matter of church cleaning at Mt. Somers aws being rearranged. As there are no Sundav schools at Mt. Somers, the vicar promised to give early consideration to the matter of .providing religious instruction for the young. After the conclusion of business, the members of the vestry were entertained at supper as the guests ot the Cold southerly conditions, with intermittent rain showers, were experienced yesterday, while snow fell lightly on the ranges. The rain will be beneficial in stimulating the growth of both crops and pastures, as the recent prevalence of winds and dry conditions had already began to check growth.
