THE EMDEN.
SPANIEL PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN (Special to the “Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, July 3. A cocker spaniel. Pax by name, and peaceful by nature, was led on board tho German cruiser Eniden this morning, and with due ceremony presented to Captain von Arnauld as a souvenir of the warship’s visit to Auckland. Pax is a gift from an Auckland lady, and for the occasion he was adorned with a bright red ribbon round his neck, with the word “Pax” engraved on a medal suspended below his chin.
The Emden visitors will take from Auckland a variety of gifts, although possibly not many animals, as the cruiser’s accommodation is not particularly suited for conversion _ into a floating menagerie. One gift is tinned tolmmas for the captain's wife, and another is a collection of New Zealand seeds.
Captain von Arnauld said this morning that he had received many proofs of friendship while in Auckland, also invitations and appreciative letters. In fact, the mail led been so big that they hael been unable to reply to everybody.
