THE NIGHT EXPRESS.
COMPLETES YEAR OF SERVICE. Exactly a year ago .yesterday, the night express service between Christchurch and Dunedin was begun. The train filled a need, and although dining the week traffic had not been great Jhe average number of passengers carried on Sunday nights from Christchurch has been about 200. The average on other nights is about 50. It has been found by the Railway Department that the passengers carried on the night evpress are not new traffic, for the day expresses have dropped in the number carried in almost the same ratio as the increase on the night express. Besides passengers, perishable cargo from Invercargill is carried on the express, and the result of this has been that during the oyster season large quantities come forward, arriving in Christchurch the morning after they are landed at Bluff.
A night goods express service between Christchurch and Dunedin has been running for about three years now, and this has proved itself to be justified by. the cargo offering. Goods loaded in Christchurch at 5 p.m. are in Dunedin at 10 a.m. the next day, and the time is approximately the same on the northern journey.
