MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting of the Mayfield branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at Ruapuna on Thursday evening, the president (Mr J. Moore) presiding oyer a fair attendance. Correspondence. was received from the provincial secretary advising that the Provincial Annual Conference would be held on June 14. Mr J. R. Simpson, Lismore, wrote asking for the Union’s support in his protest to the County Council against the laying down of a concrete road from Rakaia to Hinds.—The lettei was received. The following remit was carried: “That the Government be asked to further tighten up regulations on the importation of stock, so that there will be no chance of the dreaded foot and mouth disease enteiing this country.” It was reported that the new ganger appointed at Valetta station was not willing to take charge of the telephone, which was installed by the County Council for the benefit of farmers. It was pointed out that great inconvenience would be caused to farmers if they were not advised of the arrival of orders at the ■station. Mr Moore was appointed to interview the stationmaster with regard to "the matter and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr F. Pawson, Business Agent, on the matter. It was decided to support the Executive in their endeavour to install a manure 'depot Timam and, failing its installation, that the Government be asked to investigate manure prices and the reason for the difference charged in the North Island compaied with the South Island. The fortnightly euchre tournament, which was held in the school on Wednesday evening, was only moderately attended. Miss W. Ellery won the ladies’ prize and Mr A. Whiting the men’s prize, while the consolation prizes went to Mrs W. Whiting and Mr J. Ellery.

RAKAIA. A combined meeting of the Ladies’ and the Men’s Hockey Clubs was held in the library. Mr H. Burgess presided over a good attendance of members of both clubs. It was decided to hold a social in- aid of the funds, and to hold a combined Hockey Club ball. The monthly meeting of the South Rakaia Road Board was held in the Board’s office on Thursday. There were present: Messrs H. A. Harrison (chairman), Andrew Doig and Walter Letham. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs James Lambie and W. W. Carrutliers. The monthly work report showed that all water-race crossings on Farquhar’s Road and the Rokeby-Mitcham-Asbburton Road had geen piped. The power grader had been at work continuously, and .would shortly operate over the Overdale-Kyle Road from Gardiner’s Road to the hall. Receipts since last meeting amounted to £135 14s Id. The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote forwarding approved plans and specifications for shingling Jones’s Road from Culloty’s to Copland’s, and intimating that the work could be put in hand as soon as the authority was received. The clerk was directed to forward and application to the Public Works Department for a £1 for £1 grant for shingling the unmetalled portion of Farquhar’s Road, which is estimated to cost £IOSO. The honorary secretary of the Barrhill Public Library wrote asking permission to erect a library building on the gravel reserve near Mr 0. E. Hooper’s. The matter was held over till next meeting. Notices of sale, Ironside to Henchan. Keane to Sheehan, Brown to Stevenson were approved.

COLDSTREAM. The Coldstream- Road Board met on Thursday, members present being:— Messrs G. Tait (chairman), W. M. Bruce, J. W. Dell, W. McKeage and J. C. Guinness. The clerk reported that the piping of the creek on Beach Road and the altering of the grade of the water-course in the same road, had “Ken completed, and that shingling of part of Boundary Road, Hinds, was being done. The clerk was instructed to prepare and forward the necessary plans etc. for the Public Works Department for the purpose of a grant. Notice of transfer from Mr D. E. Freak to R. W. Holland was received. It was decided that the- teams do some grading in Hinds as soon as the present work is completed.'
