ASHBURTON TROTS. THE CONCLUDING EVENTS. \ The Ashburton Trotting Club may be congratulated on the outstanding success of its winter meeting, which was held on the Ashburton racecourse on Saturday. It held all the elements of a really enjoyable outing for followers of trotting horses. Perfect weather prevailed for all but the last event, there was a larger attendance than usual, the fields were 1 large and held some excellent horses, most of the finished were exciting, times were good, and patrons were in | a speculative mood, the totalisator handling a considerably larger sum than for the winter meeting in 1928. 'The total handled by the machine was £22,791 compared with £17,379 last year. There was not a hitch in the club’s arrangements and though the last race was fifteen minutes behind the set starting time, the delay could well be afforded.

Round at the back they were still leading from Avenger, Neerson and Baynut, in that order. Return Voyage was first into the straight, followed by Baynut, with Linkman, Author Jinks and Great Logan handy. Great Logan came through to win by half a length from Linkman, who beat Maiwhariti for second money by three lengths. Time, 4.47 2-5.

The field was spread out over the best part of a furlong throughout most of the race, Imperial Logan leading with Baby Logan second. In straight Exclusive came to light and just managed to head off Baby Logan by half a length. Young Bingen was a head behind Baby Logan. Time, 2.16.

EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT CLUB. CONCLUDING EVENTS. (Per Press Association.) HAWERA, June 8. The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s annual steeplechase meeting was held in fine weather to-day, before a fair attendance of spectators. As a result of recent heavy rain thg track was holding. The totalisator handled £9557 10s, compared with £10,667 at Wanganui in September, 1927, when the previous meeting was held, the programme then consisting of eight events. As a result of a fall during the Cup event, M. Conway, rider of Pikimai, suffered a broken collarbone and was taken to the hospital for Xray treatment. Concluding results: "Hunt Cup Steeplechase—3 Huirangi Girl 1, 6 Waitahuna 2, 7 Banjuke 3 Scr.: Lively Fire, Harrowgate. Won by ten lengths, half a furlong between second and third. Time, 5.31.

Flying Handicap, of 100 sovs; six furlongs.—l Denier 1, 5 Monoghan 2, 3 Monsogne 3. Won by a length, a head between second and third. Time, Imin 18£sec.
