TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian," June 8, 1904). Ashburton County Band.—The Ashburton County Brass Band Committee, at their meeting last evening (Mr H. A. Humphreys in the chair), decided to hold the second of the series of popular concerts on Friday, June 24, and to submit an entirely American programme if possible. Mr Ireland and Mr Fyfe were appointed a subcommittee to obtain prices for cross' belts and music pouches, which it is proposed to introduce as part of the band equipment. . Tinwald Debating Society.—The Tinwald Debating Society met last night when Mr J. Clark was voted to the chair.- Mr C. Clark, seconded by Mr J. Robinson, affirmed that bachelors over 35 years should be taxed. Mr H. Bradshaw, supported by Mr S. Culverhouse, took the opposite view. The negative side won by a margin of four yotes.

The Blackberry Curse.—Something like half a million acres, from s]elson to Okarito, 60 miles south of Hokitika, is covered with blackberry.
