To-day is the twelfth anniversary oT the Battle of Meesines.

A boy was charged 1 in the Juvenile Court, this afternoon, before Mr H. A. Lloyd, J.P., with the theft, at Dunedin, of an electric torch, valued at 12s 6d. He was remanded to appear at the Juvenile Court at Duendin on Wednesday next.

A record number of births, nine, were registered in theMethven district in May, compared with two in May, 1928. Ljst month there was one marriage and one doath recorded by the registrar. In the preceding corresponding month no marriage or death was recorded.

In the Magistrate's Court at Auckland yesterda>, Winfred Minty. chief stoker on H.M.S. Veronica, admitted a charge that he went through a form of marriage with Winifred Elizabeth Neithe at Ponsonby on December 4, 1926, when he had a wife and five children in England. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

The annual meeting of the St. Anne's Guild was held yesterday afternoon at the" St. Stephen's Vicarage, where a good attendance of members was presided over by the Vicar (the Rev. A. J. Petrio). After the business of the meeting was transacted the members were entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs Petrie.

"Some of them had never seen a racehorse, not to mention witnessing a race-meeting until they attended the Wingatui meeting at Dunedin on Wednesday," said a member of the South Taranaki farmers' party, which was in Ashburton to-day, speaking of other members of the party. The excitement was intense when four of the latter, sharing a ticket, received a good dividend.

"I am surprised at the comparative cheapness of land in the South Island compared with the North Island," said one of the officials of the visiting South Taranaki farmers' party which was in Ashburton to-day. The land, generally, was equally as good, but the prices showed a variation. The average price for land in the Taranaki district was about £6O per acre, and even as high as £BS and £9O had been paid. In the North Island there were fewer homesteads on the land, however.

The monthly! meeting of the St. Andrew's branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union was hekljn St. Andrew's Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs A. G. Irvine presiding over a good attendance. Mrs W. J. Moore reported that 21 bags of clothing had been forwarded to the Maori Mission station at Te Toko. As a result of the annual sale and concert on Wednesday the very satisfactory sum of £44 was realised for home, Maori, and ioreign missions. A study was made of mission work in the islands of Tonga and Ambrim (New Hebrides). Opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mrs Glassey, who is leaving to reside in Auckland. In making the presentation of an. Oriental brass vase, Mrs Irvine mentioned Mrs Glassey's long connection with the P.W.M.U. and her willingness to help forward every branch of church work. She wished her every happiness in her new home. Mrs H. A Lloyd also spoke, and Mrs Glassey suitably responded. The meeting closed with the Benediction, and afternoon tea was dispensed.

The installation of officers of the Loyal Ashburton Lodge for the ensuing term took place at the fortnightly meeting of the Lodge last evening, when the N.G. (Bro. S. Scott) presided over a large attendance, including visitors from Tinwaid and Ashburton. An invitation to bo*represented at the Loyal Tinwaid Lodge's annual ball on June 20 w;as accepted with pleasure. At the invitation of the Loyal Timaru Lodge a party 'was arranged to attend the opening of the new lodge at Geraldine next Thursday. Sick pay amounting to £2l 13s 4d was passed in favour of 16 members. Two candidates were initiated, one elected and two proposed. Officers were installed by the retiring I.P.N.G. (Bro. J. H. Stevens) as follow:—N.G., Bro. W. Clifford Jones; V.G., Pro. D. Moodie; E.S., Bro. W. J. Miller. Appointments to minor offices were made as follow: R.G. to N.G., P.G. Bro. J. H. Stevens; L.S. to N.G., Bro. L. Armstrong; R.S. to V.G. % P.G. Bro. H. Donaldson; L.S. to V.G., Bro. W. J. Currie; Warden, Bro. R. W. Patterson; Guardian, Bro. H. Morgan. After lodge the newly-installed officers entertained members at supper.
