Mr M. T. Timings, of the clerical staff at the Ashburton railway station, is at present on annual leave.

Sir Dudley de Chair and Lady de Chair will arrive at Hokitika on Saturday, then proceeding to Waiho Gorge to spend a few days at the glaciers, says a Press message from Hokitika.

TLe Hoy. A. L. Haddon, Principal of the Church of Christ College at Dunedin, arrived in Ashburton this morning on a brief visit. He has been on a nine-weeks' tour of the Dominion and is now on his way back to Dunedin.

The following nurses of the County Hospital passed the recent examination tor State registration:—Passed with 75 per cent, or over: Nancy E. Bowden; passed, Sheila Quealy; completed a pass, surgical and oral, Ellen M. Eee.

Messrs H. M. Jones and N. C. Jones left by train yesterday to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Booksellers' Conference. They will represent the Ashburton branch of the Booksellers' Association. The conference takes place in Christchurch and will last three days.

The honour of a civic welcome was paid at Auckland yesterday to delegates from the Grand Priorj of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. Sir John Hewett, Bailiff of Egle, and hie daughter, Mrs St. John Atkinson, Dame of Grace. The delegates leave Auckland to-day to visit Wanganui. Wellington and the South Island.

Commandant Smith and Adjutant Birks, who have been appointed to take charge of the Ashburton Salvation Army in succession to Ensign Moore, who was transferred to Christchurch, will arrive from Timaru to-morrow afternoon, and will be accorded a welcome to-morrow evening. Commandant Smith and Adjutant Birks have been in charge of the Salvation Army at Timaru during the last two years.

An Auckland message states that the Rev. W. M. Clow, D.D., late principal of the Presbyterian Theological College at Glasgow and one of the most eminent preachers and scholars of the Presbyterian Church, arrived bv the Marama in the course of a world tour. Dr. Clow's father built St. James's Church, Auckland. Dr. Clow goes south in three weeks' time.
