LOOKING BACK
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Dec. 31, 1903.) The Holidays.—Messrs Oates, Lowry and Co., H. D. Johnston, M. A. Korlf and Co., the G. H. Carson Cycle Motor Works, and Porter Bros, announce that their places of business will be closed to-morrow and the next day. Messrs J. C. Paget, J. H. Stephens, G. Kidd, F. H. Steel, J. Burgess. AV. T. Kingston, H. Childs and Co., Muir. blacksmiths, will also be closed on those days. Ashburton Horticultural Society. — The committee of the Ashburton Horticultural Society met last evening in Mr C. Campbell's office. Mr H. H. Craighead was in the chair. It was decided to hold the next annual show in February The chairman and Mr It. Lechner were left to arrange when the show would be held. It was decided to ask Messrs J. T. Smith and J. Moft'att to act as judges. School Appointments.—The Canterbury Board of Education has appointed Mr H. J. Chapman as master at Chertsey, and Mr G. Aldridge master at Winslow. Bowling.—The following will represent the Ashburton Bowling Club in the Pennant match against Canterbury oji Saturday :—Manchester, Meddins, Craighead, Harrison (s); Thomas, Scrint, Dodds, Hardie (s); Brock, Denshire, Hart, Snodgrass (a).
