CRICKET. OTAGO v. AUCKLAND. DUNEDIN, This Day. After a night of threatening weather, the clay came in fine for the Plunket Shield oriuket match, Auckland y. Otago, which commenced at Carisbrook to-day. Otago won the toss, and H. C. Alloc and Knight opened on a slow, easy wicket. Auckland opened the attack with Dunning and Allcott. The batsmen started warily, attempting nothing serious with off theory trundling, but getting an occasional ball well away to leg. Allcott, bowling round the wicket, was working up slightly more turn than Dunning, who gradually worked over to the leg side as his objective. Knight presented a straight bat to everything and only 10 were on the board after half an hour's play. Dunning took to bowling round the wicket, and, with balls that pitched on the centre stump and turned to leg, was still more effective. For him three fieldsmen stood up close in the square-leg zone, and two more guarded the deep-leg boundary. Although the fielding was keen, the batsmen

were not to be tempted. Player, whO! took the ball from Allcott, bowled a maiden to Knight. Twenty came u« - after 50 minutes' play, as the resuftl of Knight walloping a full-tosser from Dunning to the off boundary. After am hour's play, Bowley relieved Dunning - At 12.15 the 6core was 37 for no wickets. CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Lamison filled the vacancy. When his total was threes Dempster was missed in the slips and the ball went to the boundary. The} score was 18 when Lamison was smart* ly caught behind the Avickets off Cun-» ningham. Lowry went in. The bats-* men were adopting cautious tactics* Lowry's score was 13, when he wad dropped in the slips. Lowry stepped! out and drove Merritt for four, bringing 50 up after nearly an hour's play* Just before reaching 30, Lowry nearly] played Merritt on to his wickets* Dempster was now scoring freely. Low* ery twice caused derisive laughter bjj attempting to kick a ball from Mer* ritt. Dempster and Lowry were stflj together at the luncheon adjournment! with the score 127 for two. The partnership had yielded 109. At 2.40 Wellington had made 163 for three wickets (Dempster lbw, K Read, 63; Lowry, not out 70; Lam* bert,'not out, 6; extras, 16). Scores: WELLINGTON. First Innings.
