BEAM STATION FIRE.
SERIOUS DAMAGE CAUSED, i U nited Press Association—Copyright.!• MELBOURNE, December 28. A fire occurred at the beam wireless station (eight miles from Ballan, andi south-west of Ballarat) to-day, and threatened to destroy the whole establishment, together with the £30,000 equipment. The fire had been burning for an hour and a-half when the brigade arrived from Ballarat, 28 miles distant. The officials had removed the expensive valves, but were powerless to fight -the fire. • A greater portion of the main machinery and building was gutted, and the dynamos were 4eriously damaged. Only the walls of the power-house are left standing. The fire started in the roof, and: debris fell, endangering the valuable plant. The officials of the Amalgamated Wireless stated to-night. that the receiving plant was impaired, but, the transmission mechanism was undamaged, and would recommence at 6.15(Melbourne time). —Australian Press Association.
