SPEED-BOAT "AMUCK."
THE OWNER TIPPED OUT. SENSATION AT REGATTA. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 27. A sensational accident happened during the progress of an outboard motor race at Russell this afternoon, when the Humbug, which had already won two races and was going well in the third, in negotiating a turn tipped out her owner, L. Sterecker. The boat did not capsize, but continued going round in circles at fully 25 miles an hour. With uncanny luck it escaped crashing into moored launches, and in the meanwhile the spectators held their breath.' A man in a dinghy rowed out toward the wildly careering boat. The latter hit the dinghy, went clean over the top of it, and capsized the small craft and upset its occupant into the water. The spectators thought the man was killed, but he bobbed up again and swam around. The impact of the collision had the effect of turning the propeller out of the water, and so the boat's career was ended, and the owner and the rower of the dinghy were brought ashore unharmed. The former was almost rammed twice by his own boat in its wild career, but swam clear.
