Nearly 2000 persons died from influenza or pneumonia in 78 of the larger American cities last week. The Department of Commerce reported that, beginning with 608 deaths in these cities for the week ended November 3, the list has grown weekly until it reached a total of 1982 for the week ended last Saturday. Reports disclose that influenza caused 710 deaths and pneumonia 1272. In the meantime the United States' (Public "Health Service reported 240,562 new influenza cases in 39 States for last week. This figure was multiplied by five, giving the estimated total of 1,202,810 new cases altogether, as the officials believe the State records comprise only one-fifth of the total cases. — Australian Press Association.
