THEFT OF MILK.

RESISTANCE TO ARREST. I (Special to the "Guardian.") WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. On account of numerous thefts of cream and milk tokens in the Island Bay district, Constable Baker, in plain clothes, has been keeping patrol on a bicycle every morning. On Christmas morning about 5.30 he saw a man acting suspiciously and went to accost him. The man, who was Walter Richard Wjlliams, a labourer, of sixty, with a young family of six children, ran away. The constable gave chase, but when a yard or two off Williams threatened him with an empty beer bottle and then struck; him. When the constable attempted an arrest Williams resisted violently and it was not till the assistance of other people #,as obtained that the man was handcuffed. He had in his possession three half-pint bottles and two quart bottles of fresh cream. On arriving at the police station he complained of injuries. It was found that lie had two ribs broken, which the police said, might have been caused during the struggle, which was a severe one. There were three charges one being theft, the second assaulting the constable and the third resisting Fourteen days was imposed on the first charge, and a month on the second, the terms to be concurrent Accused was convicted and discharged on the third'. He was ordered to pay £1 Is doctor's fee, in default seven days, to be cumulative on the previous sentences.
