LABOUR AUCTION

OLD CUSTOM IN FRANCE.

GREAT SCARCITY OF WORKERS. HIGH WAGES OBTAINED. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) PARIS,, December 26. The annual farm labour auction, held at St. Etienne in accordance with ancient custom, illustrated forcibly the labour shortage in France. Only a dozen farm labourers and shepherds were put on the block, and there were eight bidders for every one offered. Three girl shepherds, hardly over 13 years of age, brought each 3000 francs, plus two new dresses, for a year's labour. Adult farm hands brought from 4000 to 5000 francs, with extra inducements. The auction presented the usual colourful scene. Tradition permits that every year, on the day after Christmas, farm workers dissatisfied with their jobs may try their luck in the market.—Australian Press Association.
