THE WINTER SHOW

OPENED TO-DAY. A CREDITABLE DISPLAY. SOME EXCELLENT EXHIBITS. The work of several months culminated to-day when the Ashburton Poultry, Pigtjbii and Canary Society opened its annual Winter Show in the Arcade. There were many excellent exhibits, and a promising feature of the show was the fact that in every case the live stock classes contained entries greater than those of last year. In other sections there was a fallingoff, mainly in the roots section, but the recent bad weather accounted for this. In the past the show has been held on the last two days of the week, but the Society this year initiated a scheme for holding it on Thursday »nd Friday, a departure that has met with general approval. The dispatch of exhibits to outside centres after the show is considerably facilitated by the elimination of the intervening weekend. As usual, the officers of the Society have not stinted their enerpries in working for the success of the fixture, and the 1928 6how will go down as one of the best for many years past. This is due in a large measure to the fact that breeders of animals and birds of various types have entered more keenly into the show, with the result that the entries make a very satisfactory total. Again, local fanciers'have been interesting those from other towns, and the entries from these outside people are large. Among the dogs there are Berne ■splendid exhibits of all breeds, and over 80 animals are on show. This is | a substantial increase on last year's figure, and the judge had a difficult, task in making his awards. ( The poultr" exhibits take up much more space in the Arcade than they did in 1927. there being over 50 more entries this year. Canaries are also a feature of the show, there being no: fewer than CO exhibits, the local entries beine far ahead of former years, and generally of a better quality. Competition was therefore keen. Among' the exhibits of art and needlework there were many, articles to attract more than passing notice. Garments of all descriptions were on view, most of the work being of a high standard. Other classes were for Juveniles, and the standard of work shown there was also gratifying. In the roots and garden produce sections the entries were rather small for a district such as this, but it is on account of the bad weather that so few entries came forward.

A large number of cats have been entered again this year, but these will not be on view till to-morrow. An added attraction at the show this year is a buck-jumping side-show in Ane of the annexes, which was a centre of interest throughout the day. The show will close at 10 o'clock to-,-night and will re-open at 10 a.m. to-morrow. rhe officials are as follow: —Patron, the Hon. W. Nosworthy; president, Mr G. Bundy; hon. treasurer, Mr J. Cox; secretary, Mr E. Loftus; committee, Messrs W. H. Robinson (chairman), G. Bundy, S. Beach. S. Beaueais, F. Beauvais, A. Broker, B. Bushell, P. A. Cornish, F. Clark, J, Cox, G. Dyer, W.
