ENTERTAINMENTS.

HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE. “Two Arabian Knights” is to be shown finally to-night. The story tells how two American soldiers, escaping from an enemy prison camp in Arab attire, finding themselves shunted to Arabia, and 1 helpless to prevent it. The tilings that happen to them may be funny to the spectator, but they are serious to the soldiers. However, they meet each obstacle lightly, overcome it, and pass on to a worse one. They have nothing but trouble until they meet an Arab girl of high rank. Then the\ have twice as much trouble. For Friday and Saturday nights and at. the matinee the principal picture will be “White Flannels,” a story of mining and football. DIXIELAND CARNIVAL.

Over 800 people paid admission to the Ashburton Miniature" Rifle Club’s range last night, when the 1928 Dixieland Carnival held its second of a series of weekly evening sessions. The carnival was conducted under the combined auspices of the Miniature Rifle Club, the Defence Rifle Club, the Boxing Association and the Ashburton Silver Band. The hall was lavishly decorated with hundreds of electric lamps and coloured streamers. The excellent dancing floor was better patronised than on the previous occasion, and music was supplied by Mrs Mitchell’s orchestra. . . Undoubtedly the main attraction of the evening was the tug-of-war events. The first pulls in the hist round were to have been decided, but it was announced that the competitions would not commence until the next session. Three exhibition pulls were given instead. After a very even contest the Winchmore team <s2st 81b) heat Fire Brigade (52st lib) by an inch. The Brickyard team (60st) had a decisive win from the Miniature Rifles (56st). Another even pull was seen between the Eiifelton heavyweight and lightweight teams, the latter proving the winners.

Competitions of various descriptions were provided for the public and were well patronised. A butterfly ballet was given by pupils of Miss G. Bushell, the soloist being Miss Billie Addis. Other items were given by Mr H. Clemo (song), Mr E. Conway and Miss M. Chapman (character sketch). Last night’s session may be counted as successful, and with the inclusion of the tug-of-war events on the programme, the large attendances should be maintained throughout the season. The financial results for the evening may be considered highly satisfactory. PHYSICAL CULTURE CLASS. An enjoyable social evening, organised by the Ashburton Physical Culture Class, was held on Tuesday, when Mrs Valentine presided. The evening was devoted to games and competitions, the winners of which were Misses V. Burgess P. Anderton, and Armstrong. A physical display was given by the members. Several new members were elected.
