THE WAR IN CHINA.

A NORTHERN ONSLAUGHT. HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day, 11,30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, April 12. Unconfirmed reports .state that the Nationalist forces are falling back on Nanking before the Northern onslaught, following anti-Nationalist successes in the northern Kiangsu province. The Nanking Government’s troops are recrossing the Yangtsze southward, seeking the shelter of the walled city of Nanking. The sound of gunfire is reported to be audible from Pukow, the Yangtsze terminus of the Pukow-Tientsin railway. Reports of heavy fighting between the armies of Chang tso-Lin and of Chiang kai-Shek in the vicinity of Hsuchowfu, following the launching of an offensive by the Northerners, are apparently confirmed, though the permanency of the Northern victory is questionable.—Australian Press Association.
