Mr li. F. Hillier, of the engineering;, staff of the Poverty Bay Electric- , power Board, is at present in Ashbur--ton on holiday.

Messrs J. W. Bowden and G. Kelly (Ashburton) and C. A. S. Watson(Hinds) were this morning sworn in as Justices of the Peace.

Mr E. H! Childs leaves this evening., en route for Hastings to attend the< Biennial Movable Conference of the Manchester, Unity Independent Order of Oddfellow's, which commences on. Saturday. He will be joined at Christchurch by Mr F. G. Mangin, of Methven, another delegate from the Ashburton district.

Members of the Ashburton County Scottish Society gathered last evening to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Peter Stewart and family, who leave shortly to take up residence in Christchurch. Chief H. Sinclair presided, and, proposing the toast of Mr Stewart, referred to the interest their guest, had taken in social and public bodies during nearly 50 years’ residence ip the County. He had been a member of the Society since its inception, for a long period was on the Council, and was also a trustee. These remarks were supplemented by Messrs R. M. Dunlop, Andrew Brown, and J. McKay. The Chieftain presented Mr Stewart with a London rug as a token of the esteem in which he was held. Replying, Mr Stewart said the interest he and Mrs Stewart had taken in the Society had always been a pleasure, and he thanked them for the gift. A musical programme was contributed.
