ASHBURTON DISTRICT. SUMMER TIME NOT FAVOURED. The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery was held yesterday in St Andrew's Hall. The Moderator (the Rev. A. S. Morrison) presided over a good attendance of ministers and elders. , , ' ... A vote of sympathy was passed with the Anglican community in the death of their vicar, the Rev. J. F. Wiseman, whom the Presbytery esteemed as a brother clergyman. He was a man of great charity, and wide sympathies and earned the deep respect of all who knew him, by the earnestness in which he discharged his ministerial and pastoral duties. A vote of sympathy was also expressed the Rev. and Mrs A. D. Kirkland in their recent bereavement sustained in the loss of Mrs Kirkland's father. The question of support to the Home and Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church, was and it was decided to urge all ministers to bring the matter before their committees of management and report at the next meeting of the Presbytery. Mr Kirkland reported that arrangements had been made for a Sunday Schools' Teachers' Conference to be held on June 3. A deputation consisting of the Revs. A. D. Kirkland and W. Marshall and elders was appointed to visit Springburn.

Mr E. R. Mackesy (No-licehse orga--1 niser for South Canterbury) addressed the Presbytery and stressed the value of church appeals. It was decided to ask all committees of management to consider earnestly the possibility of oppeal throughout the congregation. It was decided that a Presbyterial visitation to the St. Andrew's congregation should be" held! this year. The deputation' will consist of the Revs. A. D. Kirkland', A. S. Morrison and their elders. There was a discussion on SummerTime and its effect upon the community, and it was decided that, as the Dominion depends largely on the farming interests, Summer-Time was not beneficial to the community as a whole. The question of Sabbath observance was discussed and the Presbytery considered that Sunday visiting among Christian people wias detrimental to the spiritual life of the congregation and attendance at public worship.
