TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

THE BOARD OF MANAGERS. REPORT BY THE DIRECTOR. The Board of Managers of the Ashburton Technical School met this afternoon. . The principal reported as follows: — The roll number of the school is now 292. The attendance is satisfactory, and work is progressing steadily hi spite of the fact that the school is understaffed. From observations I have made it would appear that we shall have difficulty in obtaining the services of an experienced instructor who can take the necessary subjects. On March 29 I left to attend the sitting of the Teachers' Appeal Court, and on my return I found that Mrs Stevenson, instructor in dressmaking, was unable to continue. She is now seriously ill in the hospital, and, though later reports show that she is improving steadily, I am afraid it will be some considerable time before she is able to return to her work. Satisfactory arrangements have been made to carry on her classes during her *Xt)SGIIC& ' During the Easter holidays the central hot-air heater was installed in the cellar provided for it, and it is now ready for testing when the weather becomes sufficiently cool. A grant for the extra seating required has been received from the Government, and the desks, chairs and tables will be delivered during the present month. The newly-registered boys' caps have been provided bv the successful tenderers. Unfortunately, at least one other trading firm has obtained a supply of the caps, and is selling them to all and sundry. We have been troubled a good deal in the past by firms selling caps with the school badge to non-students. The present design was an attempt to limit the uniform to students only, and if traders are not prepared to assist in this the school will be forced into the position of supplying its own clothing, books; etc., as is done by most other technical schools in the Dominion.
