OBITUARY

MR ROBERT BAXTER. In Mr Robert Baxter, who died after an illness extending over two years, Dorie lost one of its oldest and most esteemed residents. Mr Baxter arrived at Doric with his parents as a boy 50 years ago, and did a good deal of pioneering work in breaking up what was then mostly tussock land. Though not a public man, Mr Baxter took a keen interest in local affairs, and was an active member of the Anglican Church vestry. In racing circles, Mr Baxter was well known and at one time owned two well-known gallopers, Evenload and Miss Dorie. The funeral, which took place at Eakaia, was very largely attended. Services at St. Mark's Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. J. C. Hawksworth. MR W. N. GILLIES. BRISBANE, February 9. Mr W. N. Gillies, a former Premier of Queensland, died suddenly to-day. Mr William Neal. Gillies was born in New South Wales in 1868, and became a farmer and sugar grower there, at one time being president of the Sugar Defence League. Later he selected land in North Queensland and in 1902 he was elected to the Legis lative Assembly of that State. In 1918 he was appointed Minister for Justice, and in 1919 Secretary for Agriculture. In 1925 he became Premier, but resigned in the same year. ■ /
