ARMS FOR CHANG'S FORCES. SHIPS RUNNING CARGOES. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) SHANGHAI, January 19.
The rivalry to control the Yangtse has resulted in the outbreak of hostilities between the forces of the Nanking Government, under Chiang Kai-shek, and the Independents, under Beit Suns-chi (formerly Chiang's chief-of-staff), who was responsible for the capture of Shanghai. Fighting broke out in the vicinity of Cbangsha. With one steamer having already landed a large consignment of arms and ammunition for the armies of Chang Tso-lin and Bun Chuan-fang, and with another en route to Newchwmg from Manila with a similar consignment, the Nationalist Government announces that it is taking action regarding suppliers of the cargo and reported suppliers' of arms to German firms now existing in the territory now under Nationalist control, which will, he sealed. Foreigners will be arrested and ounished. Orders have been issued for the detention of the vessel from Manila - , • Nationalist gunboats are seeking to prevent her reaching her destinations. Japanese cruisers reported that the vessel was skirting the coast of Formosa to elude capture.
