A CROSSING SMASH.
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., January 18. The' circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Andrew Percival Guthrie, the victim of a railway collision at the Longburn-Rongotea Road crossing on January 3, was held this morning. In evidence, the engine driver of the train said that he noticed deceased’s van coming on the road parallel to the line three chains- from the crossing. Witness sounded a second alarm whistle. Deceased did not take any notice. The van then turned to cross! the line. ‘Deceased had never given any indication of his intention to do so. The train then struck the van. Witness was of. the opinion that deceased had a . clear view of the line. Another witness said that deceased applied the brakes ,to his van, and had stopped on the line when struck by the train. Had the brakes not been applied a collision would have ensued. A verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally killed through his van colliding with a train at the crossing. The danger of railway crossings was commented on by the Coroner.
