BUSH FIRES IN NORTH.
PLANTATIONS SWEPT. GREAT DAMAGE OCCASIONED. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The “Star’s” Mercer correspondent telephones that great bush fires are raging between Mercer and Whangamarino. In the Taupiri plantations last night it swept through 1000 acres, leaving only about 50 acres undamaged. It al;o swept the Pukemiro plantation, right up to the manager’s house, which was saved. Then the wind changed and the fires are now raging in Mr Zimmerman’s property at Whangamarino. Great damage, particularly to waffle trees, has been caused.
THE RAETIHI FIRES. NO GREAT DAMAGE LIKELY. (Per Press Association.) OHAKUNE, This Day. Bush fires sf ill bum i round Raetihi but there has, been no damage to date. Luckily the wind dropped last night, and unless it springs'up again there is little fear of extensive damage.
