REPUBLICAN OPPOSITION. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m V WASHINGTON, January 17. The House of Representatives practically nullified the Senate's tariff policy when it side-tracked a resolution by Mr Mac Master urging the revision of the tariff. ' , ' ■ , The House ordered that the resolution be laved on the table where the Republican leaders are determined it Sh A motion by the Republican leader 'Mr Tilson), tabling the resolution, was carried by 183 votes to 104 after he Democratic floor leader (Mr Garrett had attempted to send the resolution to the Ways and Means' Committee. Mr Garrett's motion did not come to the vote. owing to Mr Tilson's motion to table it.
A message from Washington on January 10 said: An unexpected precipiation of vthe movement to. sfecure-a downward revision of the tariffl. occurred in the-Senate to-day, when Senator McMaster asked for action on Ins resolution putting the Senate on record as favouring~tariff reduction during .the present session. He intimated that relief for the farmers could not otherwise be secured. A discussion lasting for several hours followed. Senator Walsh said that certain industries were entitled to increased rates. Senator Borah said that he favoured increased duties on farm products. . Various other Senators indicated particular industries that should be favoured. It is not considered likely, however, that the present session of Congress will tnke any action on the tariff. Last week the Senate by 54 votes to 34, adopted Mr McMaster'a resolution that a revision of the tariff should be made to establish agriculture on a basis of equality with industry.
