SECONDARY ROADS.

SUBSIDY FOR MAINTENANCE. COUNCIL CONSTDERING LIST. For the purpose of drawing up a list of secondary roads on which, if approved, the'Alain Highways Board will pay maintenance subsidies from the money received from the petrol tax, a special meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held to-day, when there were -present, Alessrs A. Horsey (chairman), AV. G. Gallagher, H. C. B. Withell, R. Houston, J. Bruce, H. J. Crothers, J. Lambie, H. E. .lessep, D. J. Alorrow, J. Carr, J. Aloore, and' W. T. Lilt. The following list was submitted to the Council for consideration: — Alaronan Read, from Anderson’s corner to Tinwald, via Hinds Railway, 17 miles 65 chains. Tinwald-Alayfield Road, via Maronan and Lismore, 18 miles 10 chains. Mayfield-Valetta. Road, 4 miles 60 chains. Methven to Alain Highway SheffieldArundel, at Pudding Hill, 6 miles 15 chains. Lagmhor Road, from Tinwald through Mayfield to the junction of the Alayfield-Valetta Road, 17 miles. Rakaia-Alethven Road, via Alitcham, 21 miles 60 chains. Forks Road, from Digby’s Bridge to Staveley, via Roxburgh, 21 miles 25 chains. Forks Road, from Digby’s Bridge to” Main Highway, Sheffield-Arundel, at Rogatski’s, via Roxburgh, 21 miles. Beach Road to AVakanui Beach, 9 miles 50 chains.

Graham’s Road. 12 miles 35 chains. Surveyor’s Road. 4 miles 25 chains. Jsleworth Road, 7 miles 45 chains. Coldstream Road from Hinds to the south corner of Reserve 2012, 10 miles 47 chains. Chertsey Boundary Road to Pendarves, 6 miles 32 chains. Alainwaring’s Road, 12 miles. Rabaia River Road to Alethven via Barker’s Road, 17 miles 23 chains. Rakaia River Road to Alethven through Highbank via Allen’s Road to Alain Highway Rakaia to Alethven, 14 miles 35 chains. The Chairman stated that, under the Act, the Council was allowed 75 miles of secondary roads. In reply to Mr Carr the chairman said that the length of highways in the County at present subsidised by the Board was 139 miles. The assistant-engineer (Air 11. A. Vesey) gave the present length of main highways in the respective ridings, as follows':—South Rakaia 17 miles, Alount Hutt- 42 miles. Upper Ashburton 28 miles, Ashburton 8 miles, Alount Somers 22% miles, Rangitata 22 miles. When the “Guardian” went to press the Council bad decided to recommend the follpwing roads: Tinwald-Alayfield, Alayfield-Valetta, Alethven (Pudding Hill) Rakaia-Methven, and Forks Road (Digby’s Bridge to Sheffield-Arundel Alain Highway). The items Alaronan-Lagmhor and Forks (Digby’s Bridge to Staveley) were deleted. The other items were being considered. Beach Road to AVakanui Beach, Seafield Road, Surveyor’s Road, I.sleworth Road, were also passed. Graham’s Road, Beach Road to River Road and Beach Road' to AA 7akanui School Road were deleted.
