NEW TRAFFIC BRIDGE. QUESTION OF BOROUGH'S SHARE. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), Messrs W. H. Woods, F. Z. D. Ferrinran, W. H. Rundle, John Watson, J. Thompson, F. J. E. Smallbone, J. McElhinney, R. A. Collins, R, Kerr, W. H Robinson, and F. \Y. Seldom. The financial statement showed that the receipts since the previous meeting totalled £609 9s (id, the chief items beTno- rates £421 3s od, rents £56 10s 6d conveniences .£7l 10s lid, abattoir fees £35 13s 6d. With regard to its decision to erect a new traffic bridge over the Ashburton River, the County Council forwarded the following letter:— "For some time this council has been concerned about the condition of the bridge, and is of the opinion that the time has arrived to undertake the construction of a concrete bridge which will carry the very heavy traffic. "With'this object in view, application has been made to the Main Highways Board for a subsidy oi £3 for £1 on an estimated amount of £3OOO, but it is not anticipated that provision will be made on this year'si estimates. ■

J. K. Williams in 1922. Mr W T cods said the council's seventh share would come to about £llOO. Mr J. Thompson said he saw the timber that was taken out of the bridge and it was all sound. In view of the fact that the Mam Highways Board would not deal with the" matter till its next estimates, m 12 months' time, it was decided to defer consideration. Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Bpard, the, council received the report of the curator on work done during the past two weeks. ~ , . ■ The use of the Oral and permission to take up a collection was granted the Asrburton Basketball Association for next Saturday, when representative matches will be played with Christchurch teams. Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the council received the financial statement which showed that there was a bank balance of £66 15s 3d. Receipts in oast two weeks totalled £2l 2s 6d.
