TO-DAY'S AWARDS

THE WINTER SHOW. SPECIAL AND POINTS PRIZES. CATS AND PETS JUDGED. ) After tho record first-day attendance at the Ashburton Winter Show yesterday, patrons thronged the Arcade again to-day. From town and country, visitors attended in such numbers that the show officials had every reason to congratulate themselves on the success of this year's effort. No doubt when the final count is made tonight the receipts for the day will show an excess over the £SO taken at the gates yesterday. Cats and pets were brought in to the show to-day, and they were of a quality that drew favourable comment from tho judge, Mr T. Wilkinson, of Christchurch. Mr Wilkinson remarked that one of the best kittens he had seen exhibited was the light Persian "Lady Fayre," entered by Mrs A. L. Flockhart. When it acquired a little more show form it would be very hard to beat. There were some very good neuter cats, especially the < blue Persian, entered by Mrs R. H. Loy. The heaviest cat in the show was a magnificent short-haired animal exhibited by Mrs S. A. McKay. The two French cats exhibited were very good for their class.

The judge of the cooking section, Mrs T. H. Lush, was well pleased with the work shown in the children's classes, but felt that greater encouragement should be given by the provision of more classes. In this way the standard of the exhibits could be raised considerably. She made special mention of an entry of scones by Miss E. Shierlaw, of Ashburton East School. Regarding jthe adult section, Mrs Lush considered that while the quality was good much better support should have been forthcoming from exhibitors. She also thought that the society should provide more classes, particularly in pastry and cakes, of which there were so many different kinds that could be shown to advantage. However, she was very pleased with thei exhibits. Awards in classes judged to-day were as fellow: CATS.
