At the conclusion of the inquest on the death of Mr Frederick Witty, who was killed on the North Road on March 8, the Coroner returned a verdict that deceased met his death through being run over by a car driven by John Guy Dennison. Dennison is the engineer engaged by the Southland County Council to supervise the work of bitumenising the North. Road. The evidence showed that deceased, who was riding a bicycle, had been struck from behind and thrown against the windscreen of the car. Dennison was arrested on a charge of manslaughter. Bail was allowed in one surety of £2OO. He was remanded to appear on April 7.
