MT. SOMERS NEWS.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A thunderstorm of unusual severityvisited the Mt. Somers district on Friday afternoon, when vivid lightning, and loud peals of thunder, accompanied by a deluge or rain and hail, lasted about twenty minutes. About threequarters of an inch of rain was recorded.

Harvesting operations are now general, and a week's fine weather would be particularly welcome. Potatoes, turnips, and rape look in excellent condition, but some warm sunny days are needed to stimulate the growth of autumn feed. The young people of the district held a dance in the Memorial Hall on Friday evening, when an enjoyable social evening was spent. Music was supplied gratuitously by Misses G. Morgan and L. Wood, and Messrs W. Wellman'andl N. Hood. Mr N. Stevens was M.c. Two more special prizes have been donated to the Elocutionary Competitions Committee for the forthcoming competitions. These are £1 Is donated by L. Whelham and a valuable book byJ Mrs I. F. Peache.

A meeting of the John Hood Memorial Committee was held in the Library on Saturday, when it was reported that as a result of circular appeals and a personal canvass, over £4O had been collected. It was decided to get designs of a simple memorial <iate with an archwav, and that application he made to the Mt. Somers Dorian* Board to have the gate erected at the entrance to the Mt. Somers Tennis Courts and Public Library.
