LETTERS AND TELEGRAMS. THE CHRISTMAS RUSH. The postal officials had a heavy Christmas in Ashburton in all departments, and business is brisk again todav for the New Year. The mail-room staff has put through an enormous amount of business during the holiday season, but owing to the laree number of extra, trains run, there wa! no congestion, and the letters and Parcels were handled expeditiously. There were heavy withdrawals. m the Savings Bank department, which has Sawn considerably of months and the sale of stamps for the font days preceding Christmas netted no lG has had the great rush handling on Christmas Bj^ alone 1351 telegrams, inwards and outwards, while the exchange put through 725 toll calls, against 745 last year. It is interesting to .note that this year B telegram figures are less by one than last Willis year the rural mail system has grown out of all recognition, and another big rush occurred in tins section, ! the mail cars on Christmas Eve being I so full with mails and parbela tbr.* pasI gangers had to find some other means I oi 3 transport in to Ashburton.
