Ine dissenting Ministers have withdrawn their objections, M. Douber having offered to' withdraw his proposal for a double turnover tax. He will substitute instead an extraordinary temporary tax upon gross takings, bringing in dSUU million francs, which is much the same as the turnover.tax, but verbal changes enabled the dissentients to save their M ' Doumer's plans will bring in increased . taxation totalling 8,800,000,000 ifrancs. , , M Briand's respite lasts at least, until January 12, when the Parliamentaiy discussion on the Budget begins.
THE SCOPE OF THE TAX. .OBJECT OF THE AGREEMENT. PARIS, Decemer 29. The tax payments whereby M. Doumer proposes to obtain nearly 50 per cent of the estimated Budget of nine milliards of francs appears to be simply a disguised tax on business turnovers, which is opposed by Radicals, a-ho, however, agreed to the tax m. order to avoid a Cabinet split on the eve of the Parliamentayr recess. . M. Doumer, in exchange, promised to introduce a Bill to reform direct taxes in conformity with democratic principles, thus meeting the Radical demand for .the widening of the incometax. The settlement of the French Government's financial proposals resulted in a notable recovery of the French franc in London during the morning, to 1271.
