STEAMER ABANDONED
ADRIFT IN BASS STRAIT. CREW -BJGKED UP EXHAUSTED. (Per Press Association —Copyright.) MELBOURNE, July 23. Molymaii Company's small steamer Awaroa is drifting, a derelict, in Bass Strait, hi the directo track of vessels bound' round Wilsori?s Promontory. A wireless from the steamer Huntingdon reported that it had picked up .tlie crew of the Awaroai, numbering 13, in the •vicinity of Cape Liptnap. The reasons -for the abandonment are not stated. •
The Awaroa, which was en route from flobart .with general cargo'' for Melbourne, sprang a, teak during, a: heavy gale and began to fill. The crew worked all night knee-deep in water and jettisoned a portion of the timber cargo in endeavours to save the vessel.
Evensually it was decided to abandon her. An attempt was made to launch a lifeboat, but it was smashed by the waves. The crew managed to launch ;a second lifeboat, and after being battered about for a considerable time in the roughssea they were rescued in an exhausted.condition b.y.the Huntingdon, which .saw their distress signals.
