Harrison's Birch ... ... 3 THE SMOKE CONCERT. ASSOCIATION SUGGESTED. The OJub's thirty-first annual smoke concert was held in the Town Hall last evening. Mr G. L. Nell presided, and there was an attendance of over fifty, including visitors from all parts of the district and from South Canterbury. Apologies were received from Captain M. Lewin and Mr T. S. Harrison. The Chairman said he was pleased to see such a large gathering. Severn.! familiar faces were missing, but he noticed many new supporters, to whom . he grave a hearty welcome. Aiter the toast of "The King," which was followed by the National Anthem, the chairman proposed the toast of "Kindred Clubs." This was responded to by Mr N. Campbell, who said it would be a good idea, m view of the approaching championships, to form an Association so as to make the events open. This idea was favourably received by those present. The Secretary, in proposing the toast to the judge of the trials, Mr Adam Elliott, paid a tribute to his ability and his unselfish efforts to assist the movement, jj Mv Elliott, in his reply, said he was I always pleased to iudge dog trials— J

during the past week ho had judged at numerous trials, and he had not heard a grouch from anyone. He paid a tribute to the fine sportsmanship of the various clubs.

Mr Angus McLeod proposed the toast L'f the donor of the sheep (Mr R-. C. Todhunter) who had generously donated sheep for the trials for the past two years.

Mr Kennedy replied on behalf of Mr Todhunter, and said he was sure it was a pleasure to donate the sheep. Mr M. Carney proposed the toast of the donors of special prizes. Messrs W. J. Cooksley and S. E. Richards, in reply, said that if the winners experienced as, much joy as the donors had in giving the prizes, the latter would be amply repaid. The toast of the president, 'Mr M. McLeod, was proposed by Mr W. J. Cooksley, followed by musical honor*. Mr Angus McLeod replied on behalf of his father.

The toast, "Successful Competitors," was proposed by Mr F. Chapman, and replied to by Messrs Keefe, Mcintosh, and Davies.

Other toasts honoured were:—"The Ladies," "Unsuccessful Competitors," "Officials," and "The Press." A programme of musical and elocutionary items was given.
